A woman in a yellow jacket with white fur is writing a letter with a quill pen. But she has stopped for a moment and smiles at us. She has white ribbons in her hair and large pearls in her ears. Vermeer painted this around 1665. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
People in Vermeer's paintings are usually busy and do not notice us. It is rare for someone to look at the viewer in the middle of a task, as this woman does. On the table are a pearl necklace, a jewelry box and an inkwell. A dark painting on the wall seems to show a large string instrument.
It was probably painted for Pieter van Ruijven, a patron in Delft, and it was sold at an auction in Amsterdam in 1696. Later it belonged to a Belgian family of collectors. In 1907, the great American banker J. P. Morgan bought it. After several more owners, it was given to the National Gallery of Art in 1962.

In 1907, the American banker and art collector J. P. Morgan bought this painting. After his death, it passed to his son, an art dealer, and Sir Harry and Lady Oakes. The collector Horace Havemeyer bought it in 1946, and his sons gave it to the National Gallery of Art in 1962.
The National Gallery of Art had four paintings said to be by Vermeer. But in 2022, after a study, the museum said Girl with a Flute was made by someone close to Vermeer, not by Vermeer himself. A Lady Writing is one of the three accepted as his own work.
The dark painting behind her seems to show a large string instrument. After Vermeer died, a list of his things included a still life with a bass viol and a skull. Some think this is the same picture.
A pearl necklace with yellow ribbons lies on the table. If you count them, there are ten pearls. Large pearl earrings shine on her ears. Maybe she took off the necklace before writing.
