The first Vermeer to reach America. Her white hood is actually painted with blue!
A young woman in a white hood and collar opens a window with one hand and holds a water pitcher with the other. On the table are a golden pitcher and basin, a red patterned rug and a jewelry box. She seems to be getting ready in the morning. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer made this around 1662. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The real subject of this painting is light. Light from the window shines through her white hood and brightens the wall. Look closely: the shadows on the hood are not gray but blue, as if they reflect the sky outside. The blue cloth is reflected in the metal pitcher, and the red of the rug shows on the bottom of the basin. Vermeer knew well how colors affect each other.
In 1887, the New York businessman Henry G. Marquand bought this painting in Paris for 800 dollars and brought it to the United States. It is said to be the first Vermeer to come to America. In 1889, Marquand gave it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with other works.
A young woman opens a window. She holds a water pitcher. The morning light comes in. Her white hood looks a little blue in the shadow. This was the first Vermeer painting in America.
When Marquand bought it in Paris in 1887, he paid 800 dollars. It is said to be the first Vermeer to cross to America. Today, more than ten Vermeers are in American museums, and this painting was the first step.
Many painters would paint the shadows on white cloth gray. But Vermeer used bluish colors. He probably caught the color of the skylight coming through the window. This was 200 years before the Impressionists painted shadows blue and purple.
The pitcher and basin on the table are thought to be expensive silver covered with gold. Together with the jewelry box and the rug, they show that this is a wealthy home. Look how the colors around them are reflected in the shining metal.
Besides this painting, the Met owns 'Woman with a Lute', 'A Maid Asleep', 'Study of a Young Woman' and 'Allegory of the Catholic Faith'. That makes five Vermeers in one museum, out of only about 35 in the world.
