A Royal Collection treasure. Look closely: the painter's easel is in the mirror!
At the back of a bright room, a woman stands at a keyboard instrument called a virginal. A man stands beside her and watches her. In front are a table with a patterned rug, a white jug, and a viola da gamba on the floor. Vermeer painted this around 1662–1665. It is now part of the Royal Collection in Britain.
Light comes in from the windows on the left. The floor tiles and ceiling beams get smaller as they go back. The depth of the room is painted very exactly. Because of this, many researchers think Vermeer may have used a camera obscura, a device with a lens. A Latin motto is written on the lid of the virginal.
In 1762, King George III of Britain bought the collection of Joseph Smith in Venice, and this painting entered the Royal Collection. But at that time, people thought it was by a different artist. Today it is shown in places like the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace.
A woman plays a keyboard. A man stands next to her. Look at the mirror. You can see her face. You can also see the legs of the painter's easel!
The mirror above the virginal shows the woman's face, part of the table, and what looks like the legs of an easel. In a secret way, it tells us the painter is in the room.
We only see the woman's back. But in the mirror, her face is turned a little toward the man. Some people say that while she plays, her heart is turning to her teacher.
The lid of the virginal has a Latin motto. It means 'Music is the companion of joy and the medicine of sorrow.' Virginals of that time often had words like this on them.
When George III got it, the signature had been misread, and it was thought to be by Frans van Mieris, another Dutch painter. In 1866, the French critic Thoré-Bürger showed it was by Vermeer.
