Weighing gold? No, the scales are empty!
In soft light from a window, a young woman holds up a small balance with her fingertips. On the table are pearl necklaces, gold coins and a jewelry box. A painting of the Last Judgment hangs on the wall behind her. She looks down and waits quietly for the balance to settle. As in many Vermeer paintings, time seems to stand still.
For a long time, this painting was called "Woman Weighing Gold" or "Woman Weighing Pearls." But a study with a microscope showed that the pans of the balance are empty. The Last Judgment behind her is the moment when God judges what people have done. Earthly treasure and a balanced heart: the painting may be asking us about both.
After Vermeer's death, the painting was sold at an auction in Amsterdam in 1696. It was described as a young woman weighing gold and sold for 155 guilders. After several owners, it became part of the Widener family's collection in America. In 1942, it entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
A woman stands by a window. She holds a small balance. People thought she was weighing gold. But the balance is empty! What is she thinking about?

As the old title says, people believed there was gold or pearls in the pans. But under a microscope, the pans are empty. She is not weighing anything. She seems to be waiting for the empty scales to come to rest.
At the 1696 auction, this painting sold for 155 guilders. That was less than "The Milkmaid" at 175, but much more than "A Maid Asleep" at 62 and "Officer and Laughing Girl" at about 44. It seems it was popular even then.
A small mirror hangs on the left wall. Some read it as a sign of vanity. Others see it as a sign of looking honestly at oneself. The same object can have opposite meanings. That is part of the fun of Vermeer.
The woman may look pregnant. Vermeer's wife Catharina gave birth to 15 children, so some think she was the model. But others point out that puffy jackets were in fashion then, so she may not be pregnant at all.
