この作品のお話
Story白と黒の床の部屋で、3人が音楽を楽しんでいます。黄色い上着の女性はチェンバロに似た鍵盤楽器を弾き、背中を向けた男性はリュートをかかえ、右の女性は楽譜を手に歌っています。オランダの画家フェルメールが1664年ごろに描いた作品です。けれど今、この絵は一般には公開されていません。1990年に盗まれ、行方不明だからです。
In a room with a black and white floor, three people are making music. A woman in a yellow jacket plays a keyboard instrument like a harpsichord. A man with his back to us holds a lute. The woman on the right holds a sheet of music and sings. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer made this picture around 1664. But today the public cannot see it. It was stolen in 1990 and is still missing.
奥の壁には2枚の絵がかかっています。左は荒々しい風景画、右はオランダの画家ディルク・ファン・バビューレンの《取り持ち女》という絵（またはその写し）です。手前には大きなテーブルと、床に置かれた弦楽器ヴィオラ・ダ・ガンバ。見る人は、テーブルの向こうから音楽会をそっとのぞいているような気持ちになります。
Two pictures hang on the back wall. On the left is a wild landscape. On the right is 'The Procuress' by the Dutch painter Dirck van Baburen, or a copy of it. In the foreground there is a big table, and a string instrument called a viola da gamba lies on the floor. We feel as if we are quietly watching the concert from behind the table.
1892年、ボストンの収集家イザベラ・スチュワート・ガードナーがパリのオークションでこの絵を手に入れ、1903年に開いた自分の美術館にかざりました。ところが1990年3月18日、警官に変装した泥棒たちが、レンブラントの絵などとともにこの絵を盗み出しました。盗まれた13点は合わせて5億ドル以上の価値があるとされ、この絵は今も世界で最も有名な行方不明の絵のひとつです。
In 1892, the Boston collector Isabella Stewart Gardner bought this painting at an auction in Paris. When her museum opened in 1903, she displayed it there. But on March 18, 1990, thieves dressed as police officers stole it, along with works by Rembrandt and others. The 13 stolen works are now valued together at more than 500 million dollars. The Concert is still one of the most famous missing paintings in the world.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsフェルメールの作品として今認められているのは、数え方によって34〜37点ほど。そのうちの1点が、この30年以上、一般の人の目にふれていません。フェルメール作品を全部見ようという「全点制覇」は、この絵が見つからないかぎり、だれにもできないのです。
Today only about 34 to 37 works are accepted as Vermeers, depending on how you count. This one has not been seen in public for more than 30 years. As long as it is missing, no one can see every Vermeer in person.
右の壁の絵は、バビューレンの《取り持ち女》の構図です。この構図の絵は、フェルメールの妻の母マリア・ティンスが持っていました。フェルメールは同じ絵を、ロンドンにある『ヴァージナルの前に座る女』の背景にも描いています。身近にあった絵を、くり返し「絵の中の絵」に使ったのです。
The picture on the right wall shows the design of Baburen's 'The Procuress.' A painting of this design belonged to Maria Thins, the mother of Vermeer's wife. Vermeer also painted it in the background of 'A Young Woman Seated at a Virginal' in London. He used a picture from his family's home again and again as a 'picture within a picture'.
フェルメールは死後長く忘れられ、19世紀にフランスの批評家トレ＝ビュルガーが「再発見」しました。この絵は彼のコレクションの1点です。1892年に彼の旧蔵品がパリで競売にかけられたとき、ガードナーは代理人を通してこの絵を手に入れました。
Vermeer was forgotten for a long time after his death. In the 19th century, the French critic Thoré-Bürger 'rediscovered' him. This painting was part of his collection. When his collection was sold in Paris in 1892, Gardner bought this painting through an agent.
2013年、アメリカの連邦捜査局（FBI）は、犯人がだれかをつきとめたと発表しました。けれど名前は公表されず、だれも逮捕されていません。そしてかんじんの絵は、今も見つかっていないのです。
In 2013, the FBI said it had found out who the thieves were. But it did not make their names public, and no one has been arrested. And the paintings themselves have still not been found.
