A woman artist becomes 'Painting' itself! A self-portrait in action.
This self-portrait was painted around 1638–39 by the Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. But it is not just a self-portrait. It is an allegory, a picture that shows an idea as a person. Here, she shows herself as 'Painting' itself. With a brush in one hand and a palette in the other, she twists toward the canvas. It captures an artist in the middle of her work.
At that time, artists followed a book called Iconologia by Cesare Ripa. It said 'Painting' should be a beautiful woman with messy black hair, a gold chain with a mask, a brush and a palette. A male artist could not paint himself this way. Scholars point out that only a woman artist could combine a self-portrait with the female figure of 'Painting'.
Around 1638, Artemisia went to London to work with her father Orazio, a painter for King Charles I. The painting entered the king's collection. But after the king was executed, his paintings were sold off. When the monarchy returned in 1660, this one was brought back. It is still in the Royal Collection today.

In Ripa's book, 'Painting' has a cloth tied over her mouth, because painting is a silent art. Artemisia followed almost every other rule. But she left out the cloth.
In the 20th century, the scholar Michael Levey first suggested that this is both a self-portrait and an allegory. But some art historians say the face looks different from her other portraits. The debate goes on.
