Artemisia was born in Rome, the daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi, who taught her to paint. Using dramatic light inspired by Caravaggio, she painted strong women from the Bible and history. She worked in Florence, Rome, Venice and Naples, and joined her father at the court of King Charles I in England. In a time when there were very few women painters, she ran her own studio and succeeded.

“You will find the spirit of Caesar in the soul of a woman.”

— Artemisia Gentileschi, Letter to her patron Don Antonio Ruffo, 1649(パトロンのドン・アントニオ・ルッフォへの手紙、1649年)
