この作品のお話
Story「ゴシキヒワ」は、オランダの画家カレル・ファブリティウスが1654年に描いた、たて33.5センチの小さな絵です。明るい壁にとりつけられたエサ箱の上に、ほぼ実物大のゴシキヒワが1羽とまっています。赤い顔、羽の黄色い線。よく見ると、足には細い鎖がついています。下のほうには、画家の名前と年が書かれています。
The Goldfinch is a small painting, only 33.5 cm high, made by the Dutch artist Carel Fabritius in 1654. A goldfinch, almost life-size, sits on a feeding box attached to a bright wall. It has a red face and yellow stripes on its wings. If you look closely, there is a thin chain on its leg. The artist's name and the year are written near the bottom.
ファブリティウスはレンブラントの弟子の中でもとくに才能のあった画家です。師匠の暗い背景とは逆に、明るい背景に物を浮かび上がらせる描き方をしました。のちにデルフトに移りましたが、1654年10月、町の火薬庫の大爆発に巻きこまれ、32歳で亡くなりました。この絵を描いた年のことです。多くの作品が失われ、今残るのは十数点ほどです。
Fabritius was one of Rembrandt's most talented students. Unlike his teacher's dark backgrounds, he liked to set things against light backgrounds. He later moved to Delft. In October 1654, he died in a huge gunpowder explosion in the town. He was only 32. It was the same year he painted this picture. Many of his works were lost, and only about a dozen survive.
この絵が19世紀より前にどこにあったのかは、わかっていません。19世紀にベルギーのブリュッセルの収集家のもとで知られるようになり、1896年にマウリッツハイス美術館が手に入れました。2013年、アメリカの作家ドナ・タートがこの絵をめぐる小説『ゴールドフィンチ』を発表し、2014年にピュリッツァー賞を受賞。2019年には映画にもなり、絵にもあらためて注目が集まりました。
No one knows where the painting was before the 19th century. It came to light in a collection in Brussels, and in 1896 the Mauritshuis bought it. In 2013, the American writer Donna Tartt published a novel, The Goldfinch, about this painting. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2014 and became a film in 2019, bringing new attention to the painting.

Secrets17世紀のオランダでは、ゴシキヒワをペットにして、鎖につないだ小さなバケツで水をくみ上げる芸を教えました。オランダ語の題「プッテルチェ」は、この「水をくむ（プッテン）」から来た名前です。
In the 17th-century Netherlands, people kept goldfinches as pets. They trained them to pull up water with a tiny bucket on a chain. The Dutch title, 'Het puttertje', comes from 'putten', which means to draw water.
19世紀にこの絵を持っていたのは、フランスの評論家トレ＝ビュルガーです。忘れられていたフェルメールを世に知らせた人物として有名です。同じデルフトの画家の小さな名作にも、彼は目をつけていたのです。
In the 19th century, this painting belonged to the French critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger. He is famous for bringing the forgotten Vermeer back to fame. He also had an eye for this small masterpiece by another Delft painter.
小さな絵なのに、板の厚さが8〜10ミリもあり、裏にはくぎの穴がいくつもあります。もとは大きな板の一部で、窓わくや、何かを守るふたにはめこまれていた、という説があります。本物の鳥がいるように見せる「だまし絵」だったのかもしれません。
For such a small picture, the panel is thick, 8 to 10 mm, and there are many nail holes on the back. Some experts think it was once part of a larger piece, like a window frame or a cover. It may have been a trick to make people think a real bird was there.
小説『ゴールドフィンチ』では、主人公の少年が爆発事件の起きたニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館からこの絵を持ち出します。実物も2001年、この美術館の展覧会で展示されたことがあります。もちろん爆発事件は小説の中だけのお話です。
In the novel The Goldfinch, a boy takes this painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York after a bombing. The real painting was shown at the Met in a 2001 exhibition. Of course, the bombing happened only in the story.
