この作品のお話
Story大きな馬の足もとで、ローマ兵のよろいを着た若い男があおむけに倒れ、両手を空に広げています。彼の名はサウロ。キリスト教徒をつかまえるためダマスカスへ向かう途中、天からの光に打たれて地面に倒れ、「なぜわたしを苦しめるのか」というイエスの声を聞きました。描いたのはイタリアの画家カラヴァッジョ。1601年の作品で、今もローマの教会の礼拝堂にかかっています。
Under a huge horse, a young man in Roman armor lies on his back with his arms open to the sky. His name is Saul. He was on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians. Suddenly a light from heaven struck him, he fell to the ground, and he heard the voice of Jesus asking, 'Why do you persecute me?' The Italian painter Caravaggio painted this in 1601. It still hangs in a chapel in a church in Rome.
サウロはこのあと3日間目が見えなくなり、やがてパウロの名で地中海の各地にキリスト教を広める使徒になります。注文主はローマ教皇の財務官だったティベリオ・チェラージ。カラヴァッジョは暗い背景の中に、強い光で人と馬だけを浮かび上がらせました。天使もイエスの姿も描かず、光だけで「奇跡」を表したのです。
After this, Saul could not see for three days. Later, under the name Paul, he became an apostle who spread Christianity across much of the Mediterranean world. The painting was ordered by Tiberio Cerasi, the pope's treasurer. Caravaggio lit only the man and the horse with strong light against a dark background. He painted no angels and no figure of Jesus. The miracle is shown by light alone.

In the chapel, this painting faces Caravaggio's 'Crucifixion of Saint Peter', and on the altar between them is 'The Assumption of the Virgin' by his rival, Annibale Carracci. Visitors can compare all three at once. Caravaggio's dramatic light and shadow were later copied by painters all over Europe.

A man lies on the ground. A big horse stands over him. A bright light hits him, and he opens his arms. This is Saul. After this, he became a follower of Jesus. Today we know him as Saint Paul. Half of the picture is the horse!

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets教会の係の人が「なぜ馬が真ん中で、聖人が地面にいるのか」「馬が神だとでも？」とたずねると、カラヴァッジョは「いや、馬は神の光の中に立っているのだ」と答えた、という言い伝えがあります。本当の会話かどうかは確かではありませんが、この絵の大胆さをよく表す話です。
There is a story that a church official asked why the horse was in the middle and the saint was on the ground. 'Is the horse God?' he asked. Caravaggio answered, 'No, but it stands in God's light.' We cannot be sure this really happened, but it shows how bold the painting is.
カラヴァッジョは最初、糸杉の板にまったくちがう構図で描きました。そこには天から手をのばすイエスと天使も登場します。後世の伝記作者バリオーネは「注文主に気に入られなかった」と書いていますが、礼拝堂の改築など別の理由で描き直されたという見方もあります。1作目は今もローマの個人コレクションにあります。
Caravaggio first painted this subject on a cypress wood panel, with a very different design. In that version, Jesus and an angel reach down from the sky. A later biographer, Giovanni Baglione, wrote that the patron did not like it. But some scholars think it was replaced for another reason, such as changes to the chapel. The first version is still in a private collection in Rome.
注文主チェラージは1601年5月に亡くなりました。この2枚目の絵が礼拝堂に納められたのは、その後のことです。自分のお墓の礼拝堂のために頼んだ名作を、本人は見ることができなかったのです。
The patron, Cerasi, died in May 1601. This second version was placed in the chapel after his death. He ordered these masterpieces for his own burial chapel, but he never saw them there.
チェラージ礼拝堂はせまく、この絵は横の壁にかかっています。正面から離れて見ることはできず、入口からななめに見上げることになります。カラヴァッジョは、その見え方を考えて、人物を画面いっぱいに大きく、手前にせまるように描いたと考えられています。
The Cerasi Chapel is narrow, and this painting hangs on a side wall. You cannot step back and see it from the front. You look at it from the entrance, at an angle. Caravaggio probably made the figures big and close to us because of this.

The horse gently lifts its hoof so it will not step on Saul. Its calm movement makes the scene feel quiet.
3年老いた馬丁The old groom
馬の世話係のおじいさん。光にも声にも気づかず、ただ馬をおさえています。奇跡はサウロにしか見えていないのかもしれません。
An old man who looks after the horse. He does not seem to notice the light or the voice. Perhaps only Saul can see the miracle.
4剣The sword
地面に転がったサウロの剣。キリスト教徒を苦しめていた、それまでの生き方との別れを表しているのかもしれません。
Saul's sword lies on the ground. It may suggest that he is leaving behind his old life of attacking Christians.
