A young man in a white shirt plays a lute, a stringed instrument, and sings with his mouth slightly open. On the table are sheet music, a violin, a recorder and a small keyboard instrument. Three versions of this composition are known, but scholars disagree about which were painted by Caravaggio himself. This image shows the Wildenstein version, with a birdcage at the upper left. It is dated to around 1596–97.
This painting is thought to have been made for Cardinal del Monte in Rome, who loved music. The instruments on the table may have been valuable pieces that the cardinal really owned. The sheet music is painted so accurately that experts can tell it shows songs by the 16th-century composers Francesco de Layolle and Jacquet de Berchem.
Of the three versions, the most famous is in the Hermitage Museum in Russia. This version belongs to a private collection and was shown for many years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Instruments, songs and a singing bird: the picture is so full of music that you can almost hear it.

In the Hermitage version, the table holds a vase of flowers and fruit. In this version, they are replaced by a small keyboard instrument and a bird in a cage. The table is also longer and holds a recorder. The objects around him change the whole mood.

For this version, a lute expert pointed out some mistakes in how the instrument is painted and suggested it may not be by Caravaggio himself. Other scholars believe it is his work, so there is still no final answer.
