A young man plays the lute. He is singing, too. There are many instruments on the table. The music on the paper is real music! A little bird is in a cage.

A young man in a white shirt plays a lute, a stringed instrument, and sings with his mouth slightly open. On the table are sheet music, a violin, a recorder and a small keyboard instrument. Three versions of this composition are known, but scholars disagree about which were painted by Caravaggio himself. This image shows the Wildenstein version, with a birdcage at the upper left. It is dated to around 1596–97.
