Look and you turn to stone!? Is the screaming monster Caravaggio himself?
Medusa is a round painting on a shield, made by Caravaggio around 1597. In Greek myths, Medusa is a monster with snakes for hair. Anyone who looks at her face turns to stone. Here we see her face at the very moment the hero Perseus defeats her. With wide eyes and an open mouth, she still seems to be alive and screaming.
It was ordered by Cardinal del Monte, who supported Caravaggio in Rome. It was a gift for Ferdinando I de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence. In the myth, Medusa's head was placed on the shield of the goddess Athena to frighten enemies. So Caravaggio covered a round poplar-wood shield with cloth and painted on it.
The painting is still in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It is generally thought to be the second version. A slightly smaller shield, thought to be the first version, survives in a private collection. Later, Caravaggio painted heads again and again, as in David with the Head of Goliath. More than 400 years later, this screaming face still shocks visitors.

It is said that Caravaggio used his own face, seen in a mirror, for Medusa. Some scholars think this was his way of showing that her deadly look had no power over him.
'Caravaggio' is actually the name of his hometown. His real name was Michelangelo Merisi. The shield thought to be the first version, now privately owned, is signed 'Michel A F', meaning 'Michelangelo made this'. He signed very few works, so this is a rare clue.
In a famous story told by Vasari, the young Leonardo da Vinci painted a monster made of snakes and lizards on a wooden shield. It scared his own father! Caravaggio's monster on a wooden shield may have been meant to invite comparison with Leonardo's.
The poet Gaspare Murtola wrote about this Medusa: 'Flee, for if your eyes freeze in amazement, she will turn you to stone.' The version thought to be the first is called the 'Murtola' after him.
