Story

In the darkness, a boy leans on the edge of a pool with both hands and stares into the water. He is Narcissus, a beautiful boy from Greek myth. He saw his own face in the water and fell in love with it, thinking it was someone else. The painting is believed to be by the Italian painter Caravaggio, from around 1597 to 1599. It belongs to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Rome.

The story comes from 'Metamorphoses' by the ancient Roman poet Ovid. Narcissus could not take his eyes off the face in the water. In the end, a flower grew in that place: the narcissus. In the painting, the boy's arms and their reflection join to make a large ring. The boy is trapped in a world of his own.

People began to think this was by Caravaggio only in the 20th century, when the art historian Roberto Longhi said so. Even today, some scholars believe another painter made it. Still, the way the figure rises out of a dark background feels very much like Caravaggio's world.

A boy looks into the water. He sees his own face. He thinks it is a beautiful stranger. He falls in love with it! The bottom half of the picture is his reflection.
