Story

In a dark room, tax collectors sit around a table counting money. Jesus enters from the right and points. 'Follow me.' With these words, the tax collector Matthew leaves his work and becomes a follower of Jesus. A single beam of light comes from the upper right and falls on the men, in the same direction as Jesus's hand.

Caravaggio painted it in 1599–1600 for the Contarelli Chapel in the French church in Rome. Together with 'The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew', it was his first public commission. Although it is a Bible story, the men at the table wear the colorful clothes of his own time and carry swords. Strong contrasts of light and dark make the story stand out, like a spotlight on a stage.

This painting made Caravaggio famous in Rome almost overnight. His dramatic light and dark spread across Europe, and many painters, called Caravaggisti, followed his style. The painting is still in the same chapel, with two more paintings of Saint Matthew's life.

Some men count money in a dark room. Jesus comes in, points at one man and says, 'Follow me.' A light comes in from the right. But which man is Matthew? People still talk about it today!

The young man counting money

A young man keeps his head down over the money. Some people think he is Matthew.

4窓The window

There is a window above, but the light does not come from it. It comes from an unseen place at the upper right.
