Story

This painting is thought to be an early work by the Italian painter Caravaggio, made in Rome. A boy reaches for flowers and fruit, and a hidden lizard bites his finger. He pulls back his shoulder and cries out. There are two almost identical versions. One is in the National Gallery in London, and this one is at the Roberto Longhi Foundation in Florence. The London version is accepted as Caravaggio's work. Many experts think this one is by him too, but not all agree.

In paintings of that time, such a vivid moment of pain and movement was unusual. Caravaggio wanted to catch a split second of surprise, pain and fear. He is thought to have worked from a live model and painted straight onto the canvas without drawings. He also liked strong light against a dark background. The boy's white shoulder and the glass vase full of water seem to jump out of the shadows.

After his death, Caravaggio was forgotten for a long time. The art historian Roberto Longhi led his rediscovery in the 20th century. In 1951, Longhi organized a big Caravaggio exhibition in Milan, and the painter quickly became popular again. Longhi owned this painting himself. You can still see it at his foundation, in the house where he once lived.
