A green and silver city before a storm. Not an exact view, but a vision of Toledo.
This is a view of Toledo, an old city in Spain, seen from the north. Dark blue storm clouds cover the sky. Below them, green hills and silver buildings glow strangely. At the top right is the Alcázar palace, with the tall cathedral tower to its left. In front, a stone bridge crosses the river. A familiar city looks as if something is about to happen.
El Greco was born on the Greek island of Crete. He studied in Venice and Rome, then moved to Toledo and lived there for the rest of his life. 'El Greco' is a nickname meaning 'the Greek'. It mixes the Spanish word 'el' (the) with the Italian word 'greco' (Greek). He mostly painted religious works, so pure landscapes are very rare. Only this one and one other survive.
It is not an exact view. He moved some buildings and made the colors stronger, as if he painted the city's soul. For a long time after his death, people thought El Greco was a strange painter. But from the late 1800s, artists admired him again, and he inspired the Expressionists. The painting came to the Met in 1929.
This is the city of Toledo in Spain. The sky is dark. A storm is coming! The hills are green, and the buildings look silver. El Greco moved some buildings in this picture. He wanted to show all the important places.
From this angle, you could not really see the cathedral tower so clearly to the left of the palace. El Greco probably rearranged the buildings so that all the important ones could be seen.
El Greco lived in Spain for almost 40 years, but he still signed his real name, Domenikos Theotokopoulos, in Greek letters. You can see it small in the lower right of this painting. This signature may show his pride in his homeland.
In his other landscape, 'View and Plan of Toledo', El Greco wrote a note. He explained that he moved the Tavera Hospital, like a model, because it was hiding a city gate. Moving buildings was part of his method.
The swirling clouds and unreal green and silver colors caught the attention of 20th-century Expressionists. They saw him as a pioneer who painted feelings with color and shape. El Greco is said to have jumped across time to influence modern art.
