Las Meninas is a huge painting made in 1656 by Velázquez, court painter to King Philip IV of Spain. In a large room in the royal palace in Madrid, five-year-old Princess Margarita stands in the center. Around her are her maids of honor (meninas), the court attendants Mari Bárbola and Nicolasito Pertusato, and a big dog. On the far left, Velázquez himself stands with a brush and palette in front of a huge canvas.

🦉 Fun Fact! On Velázquez's chest is the red cross of the Order of Santiago. But he joined the order in 1659, three years after the painting was finished. It is said that the king had it added after the painter died. One legend says the king painted it himself.
