The Laughing Cavalier is a portrait painted in 1624 by Frans Hals, an artist from Haarlem in the Netherlands. The man wears a wide black hat, an upturned mustache and a large lace collar. With his elbow out, he looks down at us with a confident smile. At the top right, a Latin note says he is 26 years old and the year is 1624.
Hals was famous for quick, bold brushstrokes that catch a lively moment. The embroidery on the sleeve is full of symbols of the joys and pains of love: bees, arrows, flaming horns and lovers' knots. Some think it was painted for an engagement. But no one knows who the man was.
In 1865, at an auction in Paris, the British Marquess of Hertford competed with the rich Baron James de Rothschild. He won the painting for more than six times the expected price. It now hangs in the Wallace Collection in London. 'The Laughing Cavalier' is a nickname from Victorian Britain, and today it is one of the Wallace Collection's best-loved paintings.
This man has a big hat and a curly mustache. People call him the Laughing Cavalier. But look! He is not laughing. He is only smiling. The name came more than 200 years later!
Hals didn't give it this title. It is a nickname that spread in Britain in the late 19th century, after the painting was shown in an exhibition. Even a critic of the time wrote, 'The man smiles rather than laughs.' We don't even know if he was a cavalier.
At the 1865 auction in Paris, the Marquess of Hertford and Baron Rothschild kept raising their bids. In the end, the price was over six times the estimate. This famous sale gave a big boost to the new interest in Hals that had already begun in 1860s Paris.
Bees (the sweet and stinging sides of love), Cupid's arrows, flaming horns of plenty and lovers' knots... The sleeve is covered with symbols of love. There are also the hat and staff of Mercury, which stand for good fortune.
Baroness Orczy, famous for The Scarlet Pimpernel, wrote a novel called The Laughing Cavalier. In it, the unknown man in this painting becomes an ancestor of her hero, Sir Percy Blakeney.
