This man has a big hat and a curly mustache. People call him the Laughing Cavalier. But look! He is not laughing. He is only smiling. The name came more than 200 years later!

The Laughing Cavalier is a portrait painted in 1624 by Frans Hals, an artist from Haarlem in the Netherlands. The man wears a wide black hat, an upturned mustache and a large lace collar. With his elbow out, he looks down at us with a confident smile. At the top right, a Latin note says he is 26 years old and the year is 1624.

🦉 Fun Fact! Hals didn't give it this title. It is a nickname that spread in Britain in the late 19th century, after the painting was shown in an exhibition. Even a critic of the time wrote, 'The man smiles rather than laughs.' We don't even know if he was a cavalier.
