オランダのライデンで、ビール醸造をする家に生まれました。風景画家ヤン・ファン・ホーイェンの娘と結婚しています。食卓でさわぐ家族や、酒場でふざける人々など、にぎやかで笑える場面をたくさん描きました。ただ楽しいだけでなく、「大人のまねを子どもがする」といった教えもこめられています。画家のかたわら、ビール作りや宿屋の仕事もしていました。
Steen was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, into a family of brewers. He married the daughter of the landscape painter Jan van Goyen. He painted many noisy, funny scenes, like families making a mess at the table or people joking in taverns. His pictures are not only fun. They often carry lessons, such as 'children copy what adults do'. Besides painting, he also worked as a brewer and ran an inn.
