Kids copy the grown-ups! A very noisy family party.
This painting shows a very noisy family. Adults and children are singing, playing music and drinking. An old man raises his glass and sings. An old woman reads a song sheet. A baby plays happily in the young mother's arms. One child plays a flute, a boy copies the adults with a long smoking pipe, and a little child drinks from a jug. Plates and eggshells lie on the floor, and even the dog is wandering around.
A paper on the fireplace shows a Dutch saying: "As the old sing, so pipe the young." It means that children copy what adults do. In the 17th-century Dutch Republic, people loved funny paintings with a lesson and hung them in their homes. Steen was a master of this. He painted the same saying several times.
Steen was a painter, but he also rented a brewery and later ran an inn. His wife was the daughter of the landscape painter Jan van Goyen. Even today, Dutch people call a messy home "a Jan Steen household." The liveliness of his paintings became a saying! This painting is in the Rijksmuseum.
This family is having a big party. An old man sings and raises his glass. The children play music too. A paper on the wall says, "Children copy adults." Is this a good lesson for the family?

In Dutch, "a Jan Steen household" means a very messy home. It is a rare case of a painter's name becoming an everyday saying, and not a very kind one!
The Mauritshuis in The Hague has another Steen painting of the same saying, "As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young." It also shows a lively family. Comparing the two shows how much Steen loved this theme.
In 1649, Steen married Margriet, the daughter of the landscape painter Jan van Goyen. The father-in-law painted calm rivers and skies. The son-in-law painted noisy people. Same family, opposite styles!
Eggshells, a big plate upside down and a bottle on the floor. In Steen's paintings, mess is a sign of a careless life, and he painted it on purpose. While we laugh, we learn the lesson: "Don't live like this!"
