Story

At a desk by the window, a long-haired scholar reaches out to a celestial globe, a ball covered with pictures of the stars. An open book lies on the desk, and a painting hangs on the wall. Light from the window falls on his face and the globe. It looks like a moment of discovery. Vermeer painted only two pictures with a man alone as the main figure: this one and "The Geographer."

The globe is based on a real one made by the mapmaker Jodocus Hondius. The book is a 1621 work on astronomy and geography by the Dutch scholar Adriaan Metius. It is open to a part that tells the astronomer to look for "inspiration from God." The picture on the wall shows "The Finding of Moses." In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was a center of sea trade and science.

In the 19th century, the Rothschild family in Paris owned this painting. In 1940, the Nazis took it. Hitler wanted it for a museum he planned in Linz, the town where he grew up. After the war, the Monuments Men, a team that rescued art, found it and returned it to the family. In 1983, it was given to France instead of inheritance tax, and it entered the Louvre.
