Story

A girl in a big red hat turns toward us with her lips slightly open. She has a blue robe, an earring and tiny points of light on her lips. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer is thought to have made this around 1669. It is painted on a small wooden panel only 23.2 centimeters tall. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

This was probably not meant as a portrait of a specific person. It is a 'tronie', a type of picture made to show an interesting face or costume. The red of the hat was made by putting a clear red glaze over a layer of vermilion. Blurry dots of light on the chair decoration and the face make it look as if we are seeing her through a lens.

When it was sold at a Paris auction in 1822, it is said to have fetched only about 200 francs. It then belonged to a French baron, Louis-Marie Atthalin. In 1925, the rich American Andrew Mellon bought it for 290,000 dollars, and later it was given to the National Gallery of Art. A major study in 2022 confirmed again that Vermeer himself painted it.
