A girl in a big red hat turns toward us with her lips slightly open. She has a blue robe, an earring and tiny points of light on her lips. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer is thought to have made this around 1669. It is painted on a small wooden panel only 23.2 centimeters tall. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

🦉 Fun Fact! X-rays and other scans show a portrait of a man in a wide-brimmed hat hidden under the girl, upside down. Who painted him, Vermeer or another artist, is still being studied. The panel was reused to paint this girl.
