Malevich was born in Kyiv, then part of the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine. After learning from Impressionism and Cubism, he showed Black Square in 1915: just a black square on a white ground. He called his new art Suprematism, with no real objects at all. He wanted to express pure feeling through shape and color alone. Later, under political pressure, he went back to painting figures.
