Story

There is one black square on a white background. That's all. Kazimir Malevich, who was born in Kyiv, painted it in 1915. It is now in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Many fine cracks cover its surface.

Malevich wanted to reach 'zero' in painting, with no objects and no story. He called his idea Suprematism. In 1915, at an exhibition in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg), he hung this painting high in a corner of the room. In Russian homes, that corner was a special place for holy icons.

Some people said, 'Anyone could paint this.' But it became a starting point for abstract art. Malevich painted four Black Squares in his life. When he died in 1935, black squares were used at his funeral and to mark his grave. The square became his symbol.

This is a black square on white. That's all! Some people said, 'I can paint that.' But in 2015, scientists found two old colorful pictures under the black paint!

Look closely at the corner. The square is a little uneven. It is not perfect.

The white border
