Blue eyes with no pupils. What is this long-necked woman looking at?
A woman in a white dress rests her chin on her hand. Her face, neck and arms are long and thin. Her eyes are plain blue, with no pupils. Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian painter, painted his partner Jeanne Hébuterne in Paris in 1919. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
When he was young, Modigliani loved African masks and ancient sculpture, and he carved stone heads. But the stone dust was bad for his weak health, so he went back to painting. His sculpture helped him develop his long faces, almond eyes and thin necks. Italian Renaissance and Mannerist painting also influenced these long, elegant forms. Jeanne was an art student and painted too.
Modigliani sold very few paintings and stayed poor all his life. He died of illness in January 1920, at the age of 35. Jeanne died two days later. Their daughter, also named Jeanne, later became an art historian and wrote about her father. Today his works can sell for more than 100 million dollars.

Many of Modigliani's portraits have eyes with no pupils. There is a story that he said, 'When I know your soul, I will paint your eyes.' No one knows if he really said it, but the eyes make us wonder.
In 1984, stone heads were pulled from a canal in his hometown, Livorno. Legend said Modigliani threw sculptures there. Experts said they were real. Then some students showed on TV that they had made one with a power drill!
In his life, Modigliani had only one solo show, in 1917 at Berthe Weill's gallery in Paris. On the first day, the police made trouble and some works had to come down. His fame grew quickly only after his death.
