迷路まんまる顔の正体は「草の名前」？片まゆを上げたふしぎな顔。A round face named after a plant? One eyebrow up, full of mystery.
この作品のお話
Storyオレンジ色の地に、まんまるの顔。四角や三角に区切られた顔に、赤い丸い目がふたつ。片方のまゆだけがくいっと上がっていて、なんともふしぎな表情です。描いたのはスイス生まれの画家パウル・クレー。1922年の作品で、今はスイスのバーゼル市立美術館にあります。
A round face sits on an orange background. It is divided into squares and triangles, with two round red eyes. Only one eyebrow is raised. Paul Klee, who was born in Switzerland, painted it in 1922. It is now in the Kunstmuseum Basel.
このころクレーは、ドイツの美術学校バウハウスで先生をしていました。色や形の組み合わせを、音楽の和音のように研究していたのです。クレーはプロ級のバイオリンの腕前をもち、妻はピアニスト。音楽のリズムを、四角や丸のマス目に置きかえたような絵をたくさん描きました。
At this time, Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus, an art school in Germany. He studied how colors and shapes work together, like chords in music. Klee was a very good violinist, and his wife was a pianist. Many of his pictures turn musical rhythm into squares and circles.
1933年にナチスが政権をとると、クレーは職を追われ、スイスのベルンへ移ります。作品は「退廃芸術」として没収されました。重い病気とたたかいながらも描き続け、1940年に亡くなりました。この「セネキオ」は、子どもの絵のような楽しさと深いなぞをもつ、クレーの代表作として愛されています。
When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Klee lost his job and moved to Bern, Switzerland. His works were taken as 'degenerate art'. He kept painting through a serious illness and died in 1940. Senecio is loved as one of his best works, playful like a child's drawing but full of mystery.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsセネキオはキク科の植物（サワギク・ノボロギクのなかま）の名前。白い綿毛の種が老人の白髪のように見えることから、ラテン語の「セネクス（老人）」が名前の由来です。まるい顔は、花とも老人ともとれる、クレーらしいしゃれた題名なのです。
Senecio is the name of a plant. Its white, fluffy seeds look like an old man's white hair, so the name comes from the Latin word 'senex', meaning old man. The round face could be a flower or an old man.
左下のサインの下に「1922 // 181」とあります。クレーは自分の作品を1点ずつ手書きの目録に記録し、年ごとに番号をつけていました。その数は生涯で9000点以上。この絵は1922年の181番目なのです。
Under the signature, you can see '1922 // 181'. Klee wrote every work into his own handwritten list, with a number for each year. He listed more than 9,000 works. This was number 181 of 1922.
クレーは息子フェリックスのために、布や身近な材料で指人形（手袋人形）を50体ほど作りました。そのうち約30体が今も残っています。「セネキオ」の顔にも、どこか人形のようなかわいらしさがあります。
Klee made about 50 hand puppets for his son Felix, using cloth and everyday things. About 30 of them still exist. The face in Senecio also looks a little like a puppet.
スイスで生まれ育ったクレーですが、父がドイツ人だったため、国籍はドイツでした。晩年にスイス国籍を申請しましたが、決定が出る数日前の1940年6月に亡くなってしまいました。
Klee grew up in Switzerland, but his father was German, so he was a German citizen. Late in life, he asked for Swiss citizenship. But he died in June 1940, just days before the decision.
