Story1928年、スイス生まれの画家パウル・クレーが描いた絵です。赤や黄、青、緑の四角形と三角形を積み木のように重ねて、とがった屋根や塔のある城の町を作っています。右上には大きなオレンジ色の太陽。こげ茶色の地の上で、色の小さな面がモザイクのように光っています。
Paul Klee, a painter born in Switzerland, made this picture in 1928. He stacked red, yellow, blue and green rectangles and triangles like building blocks to create a castle town with pointed roofs and towers. At the top right is a big orange sun. On a dark brown ground, the small patches of color shine like a mosaic.
このころクレーはドイツの美術学校バウハウスで教えていました。授業では、点や線、面、色がどう組み合わさって形になるかを、ていねいに分析して教えました。この絵の、細い線で区切られた色の面は、そうした研究から生まれたものです。同じころには、四角い色の面をならべた作品をたくさん描いています。
At this time, Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus art school in Germany. In his classes, he carefully explained how points, lines, planes and colors come together to make forms. The patches of color divided by thin lines in this picture grew out of that study. Around this time, he made many works with rows of square color patches.
子どもの絵のような楽しさと、計算された構成をあわせもつこの絵は、クレーの作品の中でも特に人気があります。今は個人が持っていて、美術館でいつでも見られる絵ではありません。それでも、単純な形から画面を組み立てるしくみがよくわかるので、形と色で絵を作る方法を学ぶのにも役立つ作品です。
This picture has the fun of a child's drawing and a carefully planned design at the same time. It is one of Klee's most popular works. It is now in a private collection, so you cannot always see it in a museum. Still, its simple geometric construction makes it a useful work for learning how artists build pictures from shapes and colors.

Secretsクレーは自分の作品を一点ずつ番号をつけて記録する、几帳面な画家でした。その作品リストには、9000点をこえる作品が書きこまれています。小さな絵をたくさん描いたクレーは、20世紀でも指折りの多作な画家です。
Klee was very careful about his work. He recorded each piece with a number in his own catalog. The list includes more than 9,000 works. With so many small pictures, Klee was one of the most productive artists of the 20th century.
親友の画家フランツ・マルクの大作『動物たちの運命』は、マルクの死後、火事で右側が焼けてしまいました。この絵を修復したのがクレーです。古い写真をもとに、焼けた部分を落ちついた茶色でぬり直しました。
The big painting 'The Fate of the Animals' by Klee's close friend Franz Marc was burned on the right side in a fire after Marc's death. Klee restored it. Using old photographs, he repainted the burned part in calm brown tones.
クレーは息子フェリックスのために、手作りの指人形をおよそ50体作りました。顔は石こうや布、身近ながらくたで作られ、ユーモアたっぷり。そのうち約30体が今も残り、スイスのベルンにあるパウル・クレー・センターに伝わっています。
Klee made about 50 hand puppets for his son Felix. He made their heads from plaster, cloth and everyday junk, and they are full of humor. About 30 of them still survive and are kept at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland.
1933年、ナチスが政権をとると、クレーはデュッセルドルフの美術学校の先生をやめさせられ、生まれた町ミュンヘンブーフゼーに近い、スイスのベルンに移りました。1937年には、彼の作品もナチスの「退廃芸術」展にさらされています。
In 1933, when the Nazis came to power, Klee lost his teaching job at the art academy in Düsseldorf. He moved to Bern in Switzerland, near Münchenbuchsee, where he was born. In 1937, his works were shown in the Nazis' 'Degenerate Art' exhibition to be mocked.
