Space? Bubbles? A night sky made only of circles.
Kandinsky painted this abstract picture in 1926. On a dark, almost square canvas, circles of many sizes and colors float. Near the top, a big blue circle holds a black circle. Around it, yellow, pink and light blue circles overlap, and where they overlap, the colors look see-through. It is in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
At this time, Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. In 1926, he also published 'Point and Line to Plane', a book about his ideas on shape and color. In the late 1920s, circles became the stars of his paintings. In a later letter, he explained that the circle joins the greatest opposites in one form.
In 1930, the American businessman Solomon R. Guggenheim visited Kandinsky in Dessau and bought works from him. His collection later became a museum, which grew into today's Guggenheim Museum. The museum still owns many works by Kandinsky, and this is one of the most famous.
This picture has many circles. They float in the dark like stars. Some circles are big, and some are small. Kandinsky thought the circle was a very special shape. He connected circles with the color blue.

In 1923 at the Bauhaus, Kandinsky made a survey. People matched a triangle, a square and a circle with yellow, red and blue. His own answer was: yellow triangle, red square, blue circle. The biggest circle in this painting is wrapped in blue, too.
In Dessau, houses called the Masters' Houses were built for the Bauhaus teachers. Kandinsky and Paul Klee lived side by side in one building divided into two homes. Two world-famous artists lived with just one wall between them.
In 1933, the Bauhaus was forced to close under Nazi pressure. Kandinsky moved near Paris and kept painting there until he died. In 1937, his works were also taken from German museums as 'degenerate art' by the Nazis.
The Guggenheim Museum in New York, where this painting lives, was designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1959. From outside, it looks like stacked white circles, and inside there is a spiral ramp. It is a perfect home for a painting of circles.
