Colors, lines and shapes swirl and crash across the whole canvas. Art that simplifies or changes real things, or does not show them clearly at all, is called abstract art. Wassily Kandinsky, who was born in Russia, painted it in Munich in 1913. It is two meters tall and three meters wide, and it is often called one of his most complex works.
Kandinsky thought of painting like music. 'Composition' is also a word for a piece of music. It is said that he could feel sounds when he saw colors. He started from Bible stories like the Great Flood and the Last Judgment, but the shapes melted together into feelings.
Kandinsky is seen as one of the founders of abstract art. Later he taught at the Bauhaus art school in Germany. This is one of his ten 'Compositions'. It is now in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Sadly, the first three were destroyed during the Second World War, so seven survive today.

Kandinsky made more than 30 sketches and studies for this picture. But the final painting took only a few days in November 1913. The painter Gabriele Münter, his partner, took photos while he worked.
Kandinsky studied and taught law. At a Moscow show, he saw Monet's Haystack. At first, he could not tell what it showed, but it moved him deeply. He realized a painting does not need objects. At 30, he left law to become a painter.
One evening, Kandinsky came home and saw a beautiful painting he did not know. It was his own picture, lying on its side! It looked better when he could not see the objects. He later wrote that this moment helped lead him to abstract art.
In his book Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Kandinsky wrote that color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, and the soul is the piano. He also compared yellow to a trumpet and blue to a cello.
