A bright yellow cow takes a big leap! Marc's famous picture of feelings in color.
Franz Marc painted this picture in 1911. A bright yellow cow with blue spots leaps high over red and green fields. Behind it are blue and purple mountains, and on the right are black tree trunks. None of the colors are the real colors of cows or mountains. The cow's happy movement fills the picture. It is in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
In 1910, Marc wrote to his painter friend August Macke about his ideas on color. Blue, he said, is masculine, strict and spiritual. Yellow is feminine, gentle and cheerful. Red is heavy matter that presses down on the other two. The yellow of this cow was chosen with these ideas in mind.
In 1911, the year of this painting, Marc and Kandinsky started an artists' group called 'Der Blaue Reiter', or 'The Blue Rider'. Marc tried to show the life of nature and the inner world through animals. His paintings became some of the most important works of German Expressionism. Later, this painting joined the Guggenheim's collection.
A yellow cow jumps in a field. It has blue spots. The mountains are blue and purple. For Marc, yellow was a happy color. Real cows are not yellow!
In 1911, Marc married the painter Maria Franck. Because he called yellow a gentle, feminine color, some people think this happy yellow cow stands for Maria. Some see it as a painting of the joy of marriage.
Kandinsky later remembered that he and Marc thought of the name 'Blue Rider' over coffee in Marc's garden in Sindelsdorf. They both loved blue. Marc loved horses, and Kandinsky loved riders. So the name was born.
Marc once wrote that nothing is more mysterious for an artist than imagining how a horse, an eagle, a deer or a dog sees the world. His animals are not just shapes seen from outside. He tried to paint their inner life.
From 1910, Marc lived in Sindelsdorf, a village near the mountains in Bavaria, southern Germany. Farms surrounded him, so he could watch cows and horses every day. The blue mountains in the background remind us of the land at the foot of the Alps.
