The 'Blue Rider' got its name over a cup of coffee!?
Inside a blue border is a yellow sky. A blue rider on a white horse races upward, with a red cape flying behind. Kandinsky painted this small watercolor in 1911 as a study for a book cover. It is only 29 centimeters tall. It is now in the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
In 1911, Kandinsky and Franz Marc in Munich decided to make a book about new art called The Blue Rider. Kandinsky later said, 'We both loved blue. Marc loved horses, and I loved riders. So the name came by itself.' This is one of several designs he made for the cover.
The book came out in 1912, and 'The Blue Rider' became the name for the loose circle of artists around it. They helped lead the way to abstract art. Their activities ended when the First World War began in 1914. August Macke was killed that year, and Franz Marc was killed in 1916. The circle was short-lived, but it changed 20th-century art.
A rider painted in blue rides a white horse. They jump into a yellow sky. This is a plan for a book cover. Two painters loved blue. One loved horses, and one loved riders. So they named it 'The Blue Rider'!

In 1930, Kandinsky wrote that they thought of the name at a coffee table at Marc's home. They just put together what they loved: blue, horses and riders. A world-famous name was born in a simple way.
The Blue Rider almanac showed not only new paintings, but also children's drawings, folk art, Bavarian glass paintings and art from around the world. The composer Arnold Schoenberg also wrote for it. The editors wanted to show that very different kinds of art could share the same artistic purpose.
Kandinsky often painted horse riders and linked them to Saint George, who fights a dragon. Saint George is also on the coat of arms of Moscow, where Kandinsky was born. In 1903, he even painted a picture called The Blue Rider.
The printed cover used a woodcut based on studies like this one. This watercolor is one step on the way. Its free colors and lively lines show how the cover design developed.
