Circles, triangles and lines play music! Kandinsky's 'music for the eyes'.
Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian-born painter, made this abstract painting in 1923. There are no people or objects in it. A big black and purple circle at the top left, straight lines, triangles, half circles and checkerboard patterns echo each other on a light background. The image here is a photo taken in the gallery. The painting is in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
At this time, Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus, a famous art school in Germany. His earlier works had wild, free brushstrokes, but here he used sharp geometric shapes, as if drawn with a ruler and compass. He thought of shapes and colors like the sounds of instruments, and he built his pictures the way a composer writes music.
Kandinsky gave the title 'Composition' to only ten large paintings in his whole life. The first three were lost during the Second World War, and we can see them only in photographs. He thought Composition VIII was very important, and it later entered the collection of the businessman Solomon R. Guggenheim.
This picture has no people. It has circles, triangles and lines. Kandinsky liked music very much. He felt colors like sounds. He painted pictures like songs.

Kandinsky wrote that when he heard Wagner's opera 'Lohengrin' in Moscow, he saw colors in his mind. Some say he had synesthesia, a condition that links senses like color and sound. For him, painting was close to making music.
One evening, Kandinsky came back to his studio and saw an amazingly beautiful painting. Then he realized it was his own painting, lying on its side. A picture could be beautiful even if you could not tell what it showed. He wrote that this moment helped lead him to abstract art.
Kandinsky first studied law and economics at Moscow University and taught there. At 30, he turned down a job as a professor at another university and moved to Munich in Germany to study painting. He started his life as an artist very late.
As a young man in Moscow, Kandinsky saw one of Monet's 'Haystacks' at an exhibition. At first, he could not tell what it showed, yet the painting stayed strongly in his mind. He later remembered it as the moment he felt that color and form alone can move people.
