A yellow and orange Eiffel Tower rises at an angle from the bottom to the top. Around it are green and yellow propeller-like forms, sweeping pink curves, and blocks of blue and green. Robert Delaunay, a painter born in Paris, made it in 1924. It is now in the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas.
Delaunay began painting the Eiffel Tower around 1909, and he painted it many times. In his early works, the tower seems to break apart, and many views are mixed together. He came back to the subject in the 1920s. Here, with bright colors, the tower seems to be seen both from above and from below.
The poet Guillaume Apollinaire called Delaunay's colorful style 'Orphism'. In these pictures, color itself moves like rhythm or music. His wife, Sonia Delaunay, was also a painter and designer. Together, they made huge murals for the 1937 World's Fair in Paris.
This is the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The painter loved it. He painted it many times. At first, many artists did not like the tower. They said it was ugly!

In 1887, while the tower was being built, famous artists such as the writer Maupassant and the composer Gounod wrote a protest in a newspaper. They called it a useless monster. The next generation, like Delaunay, painted it as a symbol of the new age.
The tower was built for the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. It was planned to stand for only 20 years. But it was useful as a tall antenna for radio, so it was saved.
'Orphism' comes from Orpheus, the great musician of Greek myths. The poet Apollinaire named it. He also wrote a poem called 'The Windows' for Delaunay's Windows paintings.
Sonia Delaunay designed clothes and fabrics as well as paintings. In 1964, she became the first living woman artist to have a retrospective show at the Louvre.
