Blue horses!? A painter who believed colors have personalities.
Three bright blue horses stand close together and fill the picture. Behind them are red and yellow hills and white tree trunks. The German painter Franz Marc, who loved animals, painted it in 1911. It is now in the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Marc loved to paint animals. He felt they were purer than people and closer to nature. He believed colors have meanings. In a letter, he described blue as male, severe and spiritual, yellow as female and gentle, and red as brutal, heavy matter. In 1911, he started the Blue Rider group with Kandinsky.
When the First World War began, Marc became a soldier. He was killed at Verdun in France in 1916. He was only 36. Later, the Nazis took his works from German museums as 'degenerate art'. The painting entered the Walker Art Center's collection in 1942 as a gift of the T. B. Walker Foundation, and it is now one of its best-loved works.
Look! The horses are blue. Are there bright blue horses in nature? No! The painter chose blue because he liked its feeling. For him, blue had a deep, spiritual meaning.
In a 1910 letter to his painter friend August Macke, Marc explained that blue, yellow and red each had a character. So the horses are not blue by accident. In Marc's color theory, blue stood for something severe and spiritual.
Marc's famous painting The Tower of Blue Horses (1913) was taken by the Nazis. It disappeared around 1945. No one knows if it still exists.
Marc's big painting The Fate of the Animals was partly burned in a fire after his death. His friend Paul Klee helped repair it. The repaired part is a little duller, so you can tell it apart.
It is said that Germany planned to bring important artists back from the front, and Marc was on the list. But he was killed at Verdun before the order reached him.
