Five red dancers hold hands and spin in a circle on a green hill under a blue sky. The French painter Henri Matisse finished this huge picture in 1910. It is 2.6 meters tall and 3.9 meters wide. Today it hangs in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
A rich Moscow collector, Sergei Shchukin, ordered it with a partner painting called Music. They were for the staircase of his house. Matisse used only red, blue and green. He left out shadows and small details and let the colors show movement and joy. A paler first version from the year before is now at MoMA in New York.
When Dance and Music were shown at the 1910 Salon d'Automne in Paris, they drew harsh criticism. Shchukin first decided not to accept them, but he soon changed his mind. After the Russian Revolution, his collection was taken by the state and later divided between museums in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Today it is one of Matisse's most famous works.
Five red people dance in a circle. They hold hands on a green hill. The painter used only three colors: red, blue and green. Look closely. Two hands do not touch!
The five dancers make a ring, but two hands near the front do not touch. This tiny gap makes us want the hands to meet. It also gives the feeling that the circle is still moving.
In 1909, Matisse painted a first version with almost the same design. There, the bodies are pale pink and the mood is calm. In this second version, he made the bodies fiery red and the blue deeper. The first version is at MoMA in New York.
The ring of dancers first appeared as a small group in the background of Matisse's earlier painting The Joy of Life (1905–06). Here, he took that small group and made it the star of a huge canvas.
In its partner painting, Music, five red figures stay still while they play and sing. One stands with a violin, and the others sit. The two pictures show movement and stillness. They were planned for the same staircase, and both are now in the Hermitage.
