Henri Matisse painted this large interior in 1908. The wall and the table are the same red, covered with big blue patterns of vines and flower baskets. On the right, a woman is arranging fruit on the table. Through the window at the upper left, we see trees with white blossoms and a green garden. The painting is now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
At first, the background was green, and then blue, and the work was called 'Harmony in Blue'. Later, Matisse repainted the whole room red. Sources differ on whether he did this before or after the 1908 Salon d'Automne. He used almost no lines to show depth, and he did not clearly separate the wall from the table. So the whole picture looks like one big pattern, with color as the star.
The painting was bought by Sergei Shchukin, a great collector in Moscow. He was an important supporter of Matisse and later ordered the large works 'Dance' and 'Music'. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, his collection was taken over by the state, and this painting finally went to the Hermitage Museum.
This is a red room. The wall and the table are both red. A woman puts fruit on the table. At first, Matisse painted the room blue. Then he changed it to red!
This room was first green, then blue, and finally it was repainted bright red. The composition stayed much the same, but the changes in color gave the room a completely different feeling. Matisse tested the power of color with his own eyes.
In 1897, Matisse painted 'The Dessert', which also shows a woman setting a table. That picture was still traditional, with careful light and shadow. Eleven years later, he turned the same subject into a painting of flat color and pattern with no shadows.
The blue vine and basket pattern on the wall and table is said to come from a printed French cloth, called toile de Jouy, that Matisse owned. He painted the same fabric in other still lifes too.
The square at the upper left is generally understood as a window looking onto a garden. But with its orange frame and flat colors, it also looks like a painting on the wall. This ambiguity between inside and outside, and between nature and painting, is part of the work's appeal.
