A metal man striding through the wind. He's on Italy's 20-cent coin!
A figure with no arms and no clear face takes a big step forward. The edges of its body ripple like flames or wind, as if it is cutting through the air. The Italian artist Umberto Boccioni made it in plaster in 1913. This bronze was cast in 1931 or 1934, after his death. It is at MoMA in New York.
Boccioni was a leader of Futurism. The Futurists loved speed, cars, airplanes and machines. With this sculpture, he tried to show not a still body, but the shape a moving body leaves in space. It is a very different kind of beauty from Greek statues.
Boccioni joined the army in the First World War. In 1916, he fell from a horse during training and died at 33. The original plaster is in a museum at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. This sculpture became the symbol of Futurism. Since 2002, it has appeared on Italy's 20-cent euro coin.
This metal man walks fast. His body looks like wind and fire. The artist loved speed and machines. You can see this statue on a coin in Italy!
Boccioni only made the plaster version. It was never cast in bronze in his life. This MoMA bronze was also cast after his death, in 1931 or 1934. The most famous version is one he never saw.
Each euro country has its own coin designs. Italy's 20-cent coin shows this sculpture. If you visit Italy, you might find this masterpiece in your change!
The 1909 Futurist Manifesto said that a roaring racing car is more beautiful than the Nike of Samothrace, an ancient Greek statue of victory. Some say this striding figure is Futurism's answer to that statue.
Boccioni loved machines and speed. But it was not a car or a plane that ended his life. In 1916, he fell from a horse during cavalry training and died the next day.
