Story

A little girl in a white dress sits barefoot on the ground. Her hands are clasped at her chest, and she looks into the distance. Behind her are a big tree and a cloudy, evening-like sky, and soft light surrounds her. The English painter Joshua Reynolds painted this around 1788. It is now in Tate Britain in London.

Reynolds was the first President of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, founded in 1768. He was one of the leading portrait painters in Britain at that time. Besides portraits of adults, he painted pictures about the charm of children, and they were very popular. No one knows for sure who this girl is.

After it was given to the nation in 1847, the painting became hugely popular. In the 19th century, art students copied it again and again at the museum. It also appeared on many prints and cards. For people in Victorian Britain, it was a much-loved image of a child's innocence. It is still a favorite at Tate Britain.
