花と羽根で飾った麦わら帽子をかぶり、パレットと絵筆を手にした女性画家の自画像です。青空を背に、こちらへ手をさしのべるように立っています。描いたのは、のちに王妃マリー・アントワネットの肖像画家として有名になるヴィジェ＝ルブラン。当時の女性の肖像では当たり前だった、かつらや白い粉のお化粧をしない、自然な姿で描いています。

This is a self-portrait of a woman artist. She wears a straw hat with flowers and a feather, and she holds a palette and brushes. She stands against a blue sky and seems to reach out her hand to us. The artist, Vigée Le Brun, later became famous as Queen Marie Antoinette's portrait painter. Here she paints herself naturally, without the wig and white powder that were usual in women's portraits then.

1782年、ヴィジェ＝ルブランはフランドル地方（今のベルギー）を旅し、アントワープでルーベンスの名画『麦わら帽子』を見て心をうばわれました。帽子のかげの中の顔を、空の光と太陽の光の二つで照らす描き方に感動したのです。その工夫を使って描いたのがこの自画像。ロンドンにあるのは、最初の作品をもとにパリで描いた2枚目です。

In 1782, Vigée Le Brun traveled through Flanders, in today's Belgium. In Antwerp, she saw a famous Rubens portrait known as "The Straw Hat" and was amazed. She loved how Rubens lit a face in the shadow of a hat with two kinds of light: daylight and sunlight. She used the same idea in this self-portrait. The London painting is a second version she made in Paris, based on the first one.

この自画像はサロン（公式の展覧会）で評判になり、彼女の名声を高めました。1783年には王立絵画彫刻アカデミーの会員にもなります。しかし1789年にフランス革命が起こると、王妃と親しかった彼女は国外へ逃れ、イタリア、オーストリア、ロシアなどで肖像画を描き続けました。生涯に描いた肖像画は、数百点にのぼります。

The self-portrait was praised at the Salon, the official exhibition, and made her even more famous. In 1783, she became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. But when the French Revolution began in 1789, she had to flee France because she was close to the queen. She kept painting portraits in Italy, Austria, Russia and other countries. She painted hundreds of portraits in her life.
