パリに生まれ、ほとんど独学で10代のころから肖像画家として活躍した女性画家です。王妃マリー・アントワネットのお気に入りで、30点ほどの王妃の肖像を描いたと言われます。1789年、フランス革命が始まると国外へのがれ、イタリア、ウィーン、ロシアなどで12年あまり、各地の王族や貴族を描きつづけました。晩年には回想録も書きました。
Vigée Le Brun was born in Paris. Mostly self-taught, she was already working as a portrait painter in her teens. She was Queen Marie Antoinette's favorite painter and is said to have painted about 30 portraits of her. When the French Revolution began in 1789, she fled abroad. For over 12 years she painted royal and noble families in Italy, Vienna, Russia and elsewhere. Later, she wrote her memoirs.
