So cold, but you can't look away. Just one fox? One of art's most famous winter scenes.
Hunters and their dogs walk back to the village over a snowy hill. On the left, outside an inn, people use a fire to burn the hair off a pig. Down in the valley, people skate and play games on frozen ponds. There are only a few colors: dark trees and people, white snow, and a greenish sky and ice. Still, you can feel the cold winter air.
In 1565, Bruegel painted a series about the seasons for the house of a rich Antwerp merchant, Niclaes Jonghelinck. There were probably six paintings, and five survive. Europe was in a cold period called the 'Little Ice Age', and the winter of 1564–65 is said to have been very hard.
Three paintings from the series are in Vienna, and the others are in Prague and New York. Filmmakers love this picture. It appears in Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' and 'Mirror', and in Lars von Trier's 'Melancholia'. Many people think of it first when they think of winter paintings.
It is a cold winter day. Three hunters walk home in the snow with their dogs. Down in the valley, people skate on the ice. The hunters have only one fox. Maybe the hunt was not good!
They took many dogs, but the only animal on the hunter's back is one fox. The men walk with their heads down, and the dogs look thin. Many viewers think the hunt did not go well.
Bruegel lived in Flanders, a flat land. The sharp mountains in the back were probably inspired by the Alps, which he crossed on his trip to Italy as a young man. This is not a real view but a landscape he put together.
The inn's sign on the left hangs from only one hook and leans to one side. Look closely: it shows Saint Eustace, the patron saint of hunters, with a stag. It is a perfect little detail for a scene of returning hunters.
The Russian director Tarkovsky showed this painting slowly in 'Solaris' (1972), and filmed a snowy scene just like it in 'Mirror'. In 'Melancholia' (2011), there is a scene where this painting burns.
