Where is the hero? Just two legs splashing in the sea!
In a Greek myth, Icarus flew with wings made of feathers and wax by his father, Daedalus. He flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, and he fell into the sea. But in this painting, the main figures are a ploughman, a shepherd and a fisherman. In the lower right, you only see Icarus's legs in the water. Nobody pays attention, and a ship sails past.
Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', a Roman poem, also mentions a fisherman, a shepherd and a ploughman. But in the poem, they look up in surprise at the flying father and son. Here, the shepherd looks up, but no one seems to notice Icarus in the sea. Some experts link the picture to a Flemish saying: 'No plough stops for a dying man.'
For a long time, it was called a work by Bruegel, but its artist and date are still uncertain. One theory is that another artist copied a lost Bruegel painting, and research is still going on. Still, the picture inspired poets. W. H. Auden and William Carlos Williams both wrote famous poems about it.
Icarus flew with wings of feathers and wax. He flew too close to the sun, and he fell into the sea. But look! You can only see his legs in the lower right. The farmer does not notice. Nobody helps him.
Bruegel usually painted on wood, but this is on canvas. It may be an early copy of a lost original, but neither its artist nor its date has been confirmed. The museum itself does not say for sure that Bruegel painted it.
In 1938, the British poet W. H. Auden saw this painting in Brussels and wrote 'Musée des Beaux Arts'. The poem says that while someone suffers, ordinary life goes on nearby. The American poet William Carlos Williams also wrote a poem with the same title as the painting.
Icarus fell because he flew too close to the sun. But in the painting, the sun is setting on the horizon. Has time passed since his fall, or is there another meaning? It is one of the painting's small mysteries.
The Van Buuren Museum in Brussels has a similar painting. In that version, you can see the father, Daedalus, flying in the sky. In this one, Daedalus is missing, and only the shepherd looks up.

Only two legs stick out of the sea. A few feathers float nearby.
The ploughman
The ploughman is painted large, like the main character. He turns his back on Icarus and keeps working.
The shepherd looking up
The shepherd looks up at the sky, but in the opposite direction from the sea.
The setting sun
The sun is low on the horizon. It should be the sun that melted the wax, but it is already setting. How it fits the story is still a mystery.
