A woman in armor charges toward hell! Restoration even revealed the date!
Under a burning red sky, a woman in a breastplate and an iron cap strides forward with a sword. Her arms are full of things she has grabbed, like pots and baskets. Ahead of her is the huge open mouth of hell. She is Dulle Griet, or Mad Meg. Bruegel painted this in 1563. It belongs to the Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp, Belgium. While the museum is being renovated, it is shown at the nearby Maagdenhuis.
In 16th-century Dutch, 'Dulle Griet' was an insulting name for an angry or quarrelsome woman. In English, the painting is traditionally called Mad Meg. Behind her, women fight monsters and grab loot. The painting may show an old saying: 'She could go plundering in front of hell and come back unharmed.' It is thought to make fun of greed and violence. The monsters show the influence of the older painter Bosch.
The painting entered the collection of Emperor Rudolf II. It is said that Swedish troops took it away in 1648, and it appeared again in Stockholm in 1800. At the end of the 19th century, the Antwerp collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh bought it at an auction in Cologne. It still belongs to the museum named after him.
The sky is red like fire. A woman wears armor. She has a sword and many pots. She walks to a big mouth. It is the door to a scary place!
Before, the date was hard to read, and the painting was thought to be from about 1561 or 1562. A restoration finished in 2018 removed dirty varnish and old overpaint, and the date 1563 could be read clearly. Bruegel married and moved to Brussels around that time.
The collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh bought this painting very cheaply at an auction in Cologne. A few days later, he realized it was by Bruegel himself. It was a huge win for a sharp-eyed collector.
Fritz died young in 1901, in his forties. His mother, Henriëtte, built a museum to keep his collection together, and it opened in 1904. This painting is still shown there, along with a mother's love for her son.
A study at Ghent University found that the blue of Griet's clothes is not expensive ultramarine made from a gemstone. It is smalt, a cheaper blue made from glass containing cobalt. Smalt can fade over time, so her clothes may once have looked bluer.
