A summer lunch break under a tree! Farm life 500 years ago.
In a golden wheat field, farmers cut the wheat, tie it into bundles and eat lunch in the shade of a tree. The Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder made this picture in 1565. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the distance, you can see a village, a church and even a sea with ships.
This painting is one of a series about the seasons of the year, made for Niclaes Jongelinck, a rich merchant in Antwerp. Most experts think there were six paintings, and five survive today. The famous Hunters in the Snow is one of them. Bruegel made working farmers and the seasons the main subject, instead of stories from the Bible or myths.
The series was later split up. Today three of the paintings are in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and one is in Prague. The Metropolitan Museum bought this one in 1919. Bruegel's way of showing everyday life inside a wide landscape had a big influence on later Dutch landscape and everyday-life paintings.
It is summer. Farmers cut the wheat in the field. Some people eat lunch under a tree. One man is sleeping. The wheat is very tall!
In 1566, Jongelinck offered his paintings, including 16 by Bruegel, to the city of Antwerp as security for 16,000 guilders owed by his friend Daniel de Bruyne. The seasons series is thought to have been among them. Paintings that are now priceless were once used as security for money.
Did you notice the wheat is almost as tall as the men? Today's wheat has been bred to be short so it does not fall over. But in the past, wheat grew much taller. This painting is also a record of what fields looked like back then.
Lunch under the tree includes big loaves of bread, cheese, pears and something like porridge in bowls. Some people eat with spoons, one cuts bread and another drinks from a jug. It is a rare look at what farmers ate at that time.
Left of center, a narrow path has been cut through the tall wheat. A man with jugs is walking out of it. He is probably bringing drinks for his friends. Little stories like this are hidden all over the picture.
