In a golden wheat field, farmers cut the wheat, tie it into bundles and eat lunch in the shade of a tree. The Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder made this picture in 1565. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the distance, you can see a village, a church and even a sea with ships.

名画が「借金の保証」に！？ 注文主のヨンゲリンクは1566年、友人ダニエル・デ・ブライネがアントウェルペン市に負った1万6000ギルダーの支払いの保証として、ブリューゲルの絵16点などを差し出しました。この季節の連作もふくまれていたと考えられています。今では値段がつけられないほどの名画が、お金の保証に使われていたのです。
