Over 200 children playing more than 80 games! Do you know any?
The town square and streets are full of children at play. They roll hoops, play leapfrog, walk on stilts, spin tops, play blind man's buff, ride barrels and stand on their heads. People say there are more than 200 children playing over 80 different games. There are almost no adults in the picture.
In 1559 Bruegel painted 'Netherlandish Proverbs', and then this picture. Both show one topic with many people, like an encyclopedia. Is this just a happy record of games? Or is it a lesson that adults are as foolish as children? Experts still do not agree.
The painting is also an important record of games from that time, and researchers have studied each one. It is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, near 'Hunters in the Snow' and 'The Tower of Babel'. This museum has the largest collection of Bruegel paintings in the world.

Many games are still familiar: hoops, leapfrog, blind man's buff, swings, spinning tops, and a jacks-like game with small animal bones. One child even plays with a balloon made from a pig's bladder. We can peek into life 500 years ago.
Only about 40 paintings by Bruegel the Elder survive. About 12 of them are in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Thanks to the Habsburg family, who loved collecting his work, this museum is like a home for Bruegel fans.
Look closely. Many children have faces and bodies like small adults, and they do not look very happy. This is one reason some people think the children stand for the adult world.
Around 1559–1560, Bruegel painted three big pictures crowded with hundreds of people: 'Netherlandish Proverbs', 'The Fight Between Carnival and Lent' and 'Children's Games'. Searching for details is the fun of all three.
