A giant building site above the clouds! Was its model the Colosseum?
This is a story from the Old Testament. People tried to build a tower that reached heaven, but God mixed up their languages. For centuries, this has been seen as a warning against human pride. They could not understand each other, so they stopped building and spread across the world. Bruegel shows a huge tower rising above the clouds over a harbor town.
The tower's model was probably the Colosseum, which Bruegel saw in Rome in the 1550s. He painted a real building site of his time in great detail: walls of arches, human-powered cranes, scaffolding and ships carrying stone. At the lower left, King Nimrod visits the workers, and stonemasons kneel before him.
Bruegel painted the Tower of Babel at least three times. Besides this 'Great' Tower in Vienna, a smaller one is in Rotterdam. A third, painted on ivory, is lost. In 2017, the smaller Rotterdam tower came to Japan, and many people went to see it.
People wanted to build a tower up to heaven. The tower in this painting is very big. Its top is above the clouds! The tower may be based on the Colosseum in Rome. Look closely. You can see many tiny workers and cranes.

Look closely. The upper floors are already being built with red bricks, but the lower floors are still rough rock. The floors are not level either; they lean a little. Some people think Bruegel wanted us to feel that the tower would fall one day.
You can see rough natural rock in the center and lower left of the tower. The builders cut the rocky hill and built walls around it. It can be seen as people trying to swallow up nature.
On the right, there is a big wheel. People walk inside it to turn it and lift stones. This kind of crane was really used at the time. Bruegel probably watched building sites carefully.
In the 1990s, a poster about European unity used a tower based on this painting with the words 'Many tongues, one voice'. A story about languages breaking apart was used with the opposite meaning.
