Mary and Joseph are hidden in a snowy village! Can you find them?
Many people have gathered in a snowy village. A crowd stands in front of the inn on the left. People ride sleds and skate on the frozen river, and children play in the snow. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted this scene in 1566. It is now in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
The subject comes from the Bible. The Roman emperor ordered a census, so Joseph took Mary, who was expecting a baby, to Bethlehem, the town of his ancestors, to be registered. Bruegel did not set the scene in a faraway land long ago. He moved it to a winter village in Flanders in his own time. The Holy Family looks just like any other travelers.
Bruegel was one of the first painters to make snowy landscapes a main subject, and the year before, he painted the famous Hunters in the Snow. This composition later became popular, and his son, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, painted several close copies of it. Its mix of a Bible story and everyday life still attracts many people today.
It is winter. The village is white with snow. Many people are busy. Children play on the ice. Mary is on a donkey. Can you find her?
Mary rides a donkey in a blue cloak, and an ox walks beside her. An ox and a donkey often appear in pictures of the stable where Jesus was born. These two animals quietly tell us, 'Here is the Holy Family.'
On the wall of the inn hangs a red sign with a black double-headed eagle. It is the symbol of the Habsburgs, who ruled this region at that time. People are paying taxes at the window. Bruegel linked the emperor in the Bible story with the rulers of his own day.
Just before this painting was made, the winter of 1564–65 was known to be very harsh in Europe. Some people think Bruegel's snowy pictures were inspired by that winter.
The green wreath hanging on the building on the left was a sign that showed it was an inn or tavern. Even people who could not read understood it. Joseph and Mary were probably heading for this inn first.
